From the reigning champions in Boston fighting to fend off a revamped New York Empire, to the low-scoring wars between Minnesota and Chicago, the 2026 schedule is packed with matchups that are much more than just games, they are bitter rivalries that pack a punch. The clashes of styles, high stakes, and history between the teams make these eight must-watch matchups that could define the road to Championship Weekend.
Boston Glory vs. New York Empire
First meeting in 2026: Friday, June 5 (Friday Night Frisbee)
The top rivalry to watch in 2026 is the showdown between Boston and New York, two heavyweights projected to lead the way in the East Division. Beyond the obvious high stakes of the standings, this matchup is fueled by a perfect storm of intense player showdowns and revenge games.
At the heart of this rivalry is the UFA's most anticipated player matchup: Tobe Decreane vs. Daan De Marrée. Widely considered the two premier talents in the league, these superstars share a deep history as teammates on the Belgian national team.
Now, that chemistry turns into a competitive fire. For the first time ever, they will face off in the UFA, adding a thrilling personal layer to an already high-caliber East Division battle.

The other player who will have all eyes on him is Jeff Babbitt, who never seems to miss an opportunity to light it up against his former squad. He torched the Empire for seven goals in their lone 2025 meeting and delivered impressive performances against them throughout 2024. Between his long history with New York and his status as one of the greatest to ever play in the UFA, his appearances against his old team have become must-watch television.
The consensus points toward an East Division title showdown featuring De Marrée, Decreane, and Babbitt. The matchup would be historic, as Boston and New York have never faced off for the division title. A postseason meeting would carry the prestige of a final. So expect their two regular-season bouts to be high-quality, competitive games where each team looks to make a statement.
Minnesota Wind Chill vs. Chicago Union
First meeting in 2026: Saturday, May 2
The rivalry between Minnesota and Chicago stands as one of the most balanced in the league, with the Wind Chill holding a razor-thin 19-18 edge (excluding one tie).
Their latest clash followed the familiar script: an epic 19-17 battle defined by spectacular layouts and relentless, "stingy" defense. For most of the match, the outcome hung in the balance, maintaining the tension of the gritty, low-scoring duels that have become a hallmark of this series. In this matchup, defensive grinds resulting in scores like 16-15 or 14-11 aren't outliers—they are the standard established over years of intense competition.
Last year, Chicago secured their first-ever season series sweep against Minnesota, a major achievement given their head-to-head rivalry dates back to 2014. But we don't expect a repeat performance in 2026.
The Wind Chill enter the season as the favorites in the Central Division, bolstered by a stable core and high-impact offseason signings. Meanwhile, Chicago suffered significant roster turnover that has left the team looking much less intimidating. Minnesota isn't just looking to snap their regular season losing skid against Chicago, they are ready to begin a winning streak of their own.
Oakland Spiders vs. Salt Lake Shred
First meeting in 2026: Saturday, May 2 (Game Of The Week)
The rivalry between Oakland and Salt Lake has reached a boiling point. Following a series of nail-biting finishes last season and their joint stranglehold on the West, the stakes have never been higher. Like Boston vs. New York, these two are the frontrunners for the division title, so we’ll get three previews of the likely West Division battle for a spot at Championship Weekend.
The 2026 season represents a critical crossroads for the Spiders. They have never defeated the Shred, so a win in their season series would not only disrupt the psychological hierarchy of the West but also potentially force the divisional playoffs to take place in Oakland.

Home-field advantage has been an important factor for the Spiders in their series against the Shred. While the teams have met eight times, half of those matchups ended as relatively close contests (within three goals), with the majority of those competitive games taking place at Foothill College Stadium in Oakland. The Spiders did stay competitive with the Shred at Zions Bank Stadium in the West Division title game, but Salt Lake’s crowd energy emerged as an X-factor, providing some late-game momentum that helped the Shred end Oakland’s season.
This season, two specific X-factors, Anton Orme and Carson Armstrong, could spice up this rivalry.
Orme may be a rookie, but he already has the high-end talent to match the remarkable offensive production seen from the Spiders’ breakout rookies last year. Armstrong, a UFA playmaker with a proven track record, adds yet another offensive weapon to Salt Lake’s loaded group.
Adding these players to two of the strongest offenses in the league should give us one of the most explosive rivalries in 2026.
Atlanta Hustle vs. Carolina Flyers
First meeting in 2026: Saturday, May 16
Of all the rivalries on this list, no two teams have met more often over the last three years. This constant familiarity is what defines the matchup; Atlanta and Carolina have squared off at least four times in each of the past three seasons, and they are set for another four-game regular season series this year.
Recently, Atlanta has taken control of the rivalry, winning eight of their last 13 encounters. That trend is a major concern for Carolina, who is going to be in a four-team battle for a playoff spot—especially with Austin likely cruising toward a berth thanks to an easy schedule.

This makes these meetings even more vital. To add to the drama, the two sides are scheduled to play each other three times in three consecutive weeks, an unprecedented scheduling quirk that marks the first time they’ve ever played one another so frequently in such a short window.
I’m fascinated to see how both coaching staffs navigate the tactical chess match required by this schedule.
Can Atlanta’s overwhelming offensive firepower repeatedly outclass a Carolina defense that, on paper, looks overmatched? Will Carolina attempt to neutralize the Hustle’s high-powered offense by bleeding the clock and shortening the game? Given the elite deep throwers on both rosters, will we just see shootout after shootout defined by constant field-stretching?
New York Empire vs. DC Breeze
First meeting in 2026: Sunday, May 10 (Friday Night Frisbee)
Regardless of the outcomes this season, the history between New York and DC stands as one of the most intense and enduring feuds in UFA history. While New York has historically held the upper hand, boasting two Divisional Championship Game victories over DC in the past four years and leading the all-time head-to-head 21-16, the tide has shifted dramatically over the past two years.
The shift was perfectly portrayed in their most recent chapter. In the first round of the 2025 East Division Playoffs, the DC Breeze dismantled the Empire with a 23-12 victory.
Even after that lopsided defeat, New York will likely remain the favorite in every matchup against DC this season, including their two high-profile appearances. The rivalry takes center stage on Friday Night Frisbee on May 10, followed by a May 23 feature as the Game of the Week.
But if DC can capitalize on the early-season transition period, while De Marrée, Alex Atkins, and New York’s other newcomers are still finding their rhythm, it could fundamentally shift the dynamic of an already compelling East Division race.
RIVALRY WEEKEND
Beyond the massive Boston-New York showdown, Week 7’s Rivalry Weekend is packed with high-stakes matchups. Because many of these contests involve postseason hopefuls with extensive competitive histories, this weekend is widely considered the season's best showcase for UFA rivalries.
Colorado Apex at Salt Lake Shred
Week 7 spotlights a rivalry that has undergone a complete power shift, and the momentum shows no signs of slowing down.
Early on, Colorado owned this matchup. During their 2022 debut season, they swept the Shred in all three meetings, including two five-goal victories. However, the tide turned in 2023. Since then, Salt Lake has seized control, winning five of the last six encounters.
While half of those last six games were decided by a single goal, the 2025 results were significantly more lopsided. This suggests that the Apex aren't just losing; they’re losing ground.
To reverse this trend in 2025, Colorado faces a massive uphill battle. The Shred have maintained a remarkably consistent core, while Colorado has undergone a ground-up transformation, rebranding from the Summit to the Apex and losing a handful of key players.
The rebrand brought in Head Coach Joe Durst and added former standout Matt Jackson to the coaching staff. On paper, Salt Lake enters as the clear favorite, so for the Apex to pull off an upset, it could come down to coaching. Durst and his staff must find a tactical edge to bridge the talent gap and prove that this new identity can keep up with the Shred.
Madison Radicals vs. Chicago Union
For Madison, the upcoming series against Chicago is shaping up to be the defining stretch of their season.
The Radicals have lost eight straight to the Wind Chill, and with the AlleyCats fielding a roster that looks overwhelming on paper, Madison’s path to postseason relevance is narrowing. Chicago could represent their most realistic opportunity to pick up wins and keep their playoff hopes alive.
Despite the departure of several key players from their undefeated 2025 campaign, the Union remain the favorites over Madison. Chicago’s strong defense could cause problems for a Radicals offense that hasn’t been able to level up.
Even without defensive anchors like Payne and Wettengel, the Union’s D-line should remain effective, featuring disruptors like Ben Preiss, new addition Mikey O-Brien, and former Radical Jake Rubin-Miller.
Will any of Madison’s improving O-liners be able to give them the multidimensional attack that they’ll need against Chicago? Despite scoring over 100 goals in his last two seasons, Anthony Gutowsky has averaged just two per game against the Union their last three meetings.
When these two meet, keep an eye on Noa Chun-Moy, Eric Sjostrom, Victor Luo, and Nico Ranabhat. While Chun-Moy, Sjostrom, and Ranabhat are coming off breakout offensive seasons in 2025, the return of Luo restores a high-level playmaker to the Madison backfield.
DC Breeze vs. Carolina Flyers
For the tenth time, the DC Breeze and Carolina Flyers are set to collide in a matchup that has become the hidden gem of the UFA calendar. While Week 7 marks their only regular-season encounter, this remains one of the premier interdivisional rivalries in the league.

Historically, this has been a tug-of-war, though the Breeze currently hold a 6-3 lead in the all-time series. DC has won three of the last four meetings, but they are by no means the favorite going into this year’s matchup.
DC is facing questions regarding depth and overall firepower compared to previous rosters, while the Flyers added high-profile offseason additions to a roster designed to peak midseason.
Carolina is expected to be at full strength for this showdown. With college commitments behind them, stars Tobias Brooks and Zeke Thoreson should be active, providing a massive boost to the Flyers' offense.
If Carolina’s offense hums against DC, new Breeze addition Sean Mott could be asked to inject more tempo into their system, potentially fighting fire with fire to keep pace.
