Mechanix Set to Return to the Field in June

May 20, 2021

After more than 600 days without playing a game, the Detroit Mechanix of the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) will return to the field this summer. The 2021 AUDL schedule has officially been announced; the Mechanix will play a 12-game regular season from June to August, with the potential for playoff games in September. Mechanix home opener will be played Saturday, June 5 at 6:00 PM/ET at Grand Rapids Christian High School against the Madison Radicals.

The Mechanix enter the 2021 season playing in the new Central Division, where they’ll match up with Chicago, Indianapolis, Madison, and Minnesota throughout the season. One of the original eight teams back when the league was founded in 20212, the team has been around since the beginning, though it has been a difficult past few years for Mechanix fans: The team has not won an AUDL game in nearly 1,500 days, dating back to the 2017 season. They’ve gone winless each of the last two seasons, and will look to break the streak on June 4th in their season opener against Indianapolis.

2021 could be the year that will put the Mechanix back on the map. Head Coach Brent Steepe, who last coached the team in 2017 and helped break their then-1,000 day losing streak, is back at the helm, this time with co-coach Gerald Chizmadia. The team has also added former Indianapolis AlleyCats Colin Ringwood and Terry Gaither, while returning several key players headlined by 2019 All-Star Joe Cubitt. Over the last two years the team has rebuilt their culture, enhanced their training protocols, and are looking to compete.

"We have a lot to prove to other people, and more importantly, we have a lot to prove to ourselves," acknowledged Steepe. "We’re gonna be heard from this year."
