Detroit And Los Angeles Suspend Team Operations Following 2025 Season

November 12, 2025

The Ultimate Frisbee Association (UFA) has announced that the Detroit Mechanix and Los Angeles Aviators will be suspending UFA operations and departing the league effective immediately.

As one of the UFA’s eight original teams, the Detroit Mechanix have been a cornerstone of professional ultimate frisbee since the league’s inaugural season in 2012. Led by team owner Brent Steepe, the Mechanix helped pioneer the growth of professional ultimate in the Midwest and played more than 150 games throughout North America across 13 seasons.

“It’s remarkable to look back and see how far we’ve come,” said Steepe. “What began as an idea has evolved into a living, breathing representation of passion, growth, and community. I’m grateful to have played my part in its creation and existence."

“The Mechanix helped launch this league,” said UFA CEO & Commissioner Tim DeByl. “Brent’s dedication and passion to the league have been instrumental in making it what it is today. From the very beginning, he built and ran the Mechanix with heart, perseverance, and a belief in this sport. We wouldn’t be here without him.”

As the league continues to grow, achieving record-breaking attendance and broadcast viewership in 2025, the team model has evolved into larger ownership groups, expanded local operations and increased financial investment. This new structure is designed to build stronger, more sustainable organizations in every city across each of the four divisions.

The Los Angeles Aviators joined the league in 2015 and finished with a 68-68 all-time record after 10 seasons of play. LA qualified for the playoffs five times in franchise history, made three divisional championship game appearances (2018, 2021, 2023), and peaked with a West Division title in 2018. Players from both the Aviators and Mechanix will be eligible to try out for any other UFA team ahead of the 2026 season.

“We thank the Aviators organization for more than a decade of contributions to our league, on and off the field,” said DeByl. “And as one of the charter members, the Mechanix will always hold a special place in UFA history,” DeByl added. “We deeply thank Brent, the team’s players past and present, and everyone who’s been part of the Mechanix family for their commitment to pro ultimate as well."

“As we step away, my heart is full of gratitude,” Steepe said. “To the fans who believed in the vision, the owners who invested their hearts and resources, and the management teams who turned ideas into action — thank you. Since 2010, this league has been more than a collection of teams; it’s been a family of dreamers and doers. I’m proud to have been part of building this foundation and even prouder to see where it will go next.”
