Toronto Continues Strong Offseason, Adds Two Top Ottawa Players

With their promising young core mostly re-signed, and two World Games players in Mike Mackenzie and Ty Barbieri set to make big debuts in 2023, the Toronto Rush continued an offseason signing spree by adding Ottawa’s two top assist throwers from last season in Jeremy Hill and Geoff Bevan. The Rush and their raft of new talent are looking to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2019, and could have the easiest schedule in the East Division.

Hill is coming off a career year and an all-star selection in 2022. A seven-year veteran with the Outlaws, Hill set career highs in assists, completions, completion rate, total yards, and points played while showcasing a bigger throwing arsenal than ever before; Hill had 20 or more completions in 11 of his 12 starts last season, and had just two such performances in his six seasons prior. A striker type on offense, Hill operates as a roaming tight end option, able to make catches in traffic as well as distribute efficiently as a continuation thrower.

Since the start of the 2021 season, only eight AUDL players have averaged more throwing yards per game (372) than Bevan. A long range bomber, Bevan is dangerous with the disc when he gets into power position and has a quick trigger, averaging 2.4 huck completions over his last 16 starts, putting him in the same strata as Jonathan Nethercutt, Bobby Ley, and Austin Taylor. Bevan had a career game against the Rush last season on May 14, tossing seven assists and 740 passing yards on 61-of-64 throws.

The added passing power coupled with Toronto’s stable of emerging receiver talent is extremely interesting. Bevan figures to complement the skills of Ryan Poloz and Luc Comiré in the backfield, and will provide the Rush with a nicely balanced throwing attack. And with Hill, Mackenzie, Barbieri, Oscar Stonehouse, and the Lewis brothers James and Wilkie as potential targets, Toronto will be able to beat teams equally with speed and size downfield.

Artemakis Returns To Chicago, Boosts Receiving Core

Even though he’s made just 15 starts in his first two seasons, Eli Artemakis has proven to be one of the most interesting prospects in the Central Division for the Chicago Union the past two years. And with his 21st birthday still over a month away, Artemakis could make a leap in his third season as a pro.

In five appearances in 2022, Artemakis averaged a team-high 4.2 goals per game, combining his incredible physical tools with an end-of-bench player’s hustle. And while his 232 receiving yards per game average is nothing to sniff at, it undersells just how much running Artemakis does on a given point; Artemakis doesn’t just get open, he grinds down defenders in one-on-one matchups.

With Chicago retaining All-Star Ross Barker, re-signing Jack Shanahan, and adding Detroit’s All-Star Andrew Sjogren, the Artemakis re-add gives the Union the best and most balanced receiving core in the Central Division heading into 2023.

Madison Restocks With Team Vets

The Madison Radicals announced this week the return of All-Star Kevin Pettit-Scantling along with throwers Victor Luo and Joshua Wilson, as well as the return of Brian Hart; Hart last played for the team in 2017, and averaged 3.6 scores and nearly a block per game in 55 career starts.

Since winning the AUDL title in 2018, the Radicals have gone 19-17 and failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. Madison begins the 2023 season on the road against Pittsburgh on April 29. The Radicals have won eight of their nine season openers since 2013.
