Thunderbirds Look to Hand Minnesota First Loss of Season

Pittsburgh, PA - This Sunday, the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds (2-5) return home to F.N.B. Stadium to host the undefeated Minnesota Wind Chill (9-0).

Tickets for July 5th

If it feels like the Thunderbirds haven't taken the field in a while, it's because they haven't. Pittsburgh's last game came on June 14, giving the team a rare three-week break between contests.

That June 14 matchup also marked Pittsburgh's first home victory of the 2026 season, a 22-18 win over the Chicago Union. Reid Duncan paced the offense with seven goals and two assists, while Jimmy Towle, Will Hoffenkamp, Dylan Best, and Noah Celuch each added two goals.

Minnesota enters Sunday's matchup after extending its perfect season with a convincing 25-16 road victory over the Chicago Union on Friday night. Zach Morton led the Wind Chill offense with six goals and a +7 performance, while Kyle Johnson dished out four assists. Minnesota was efficient throughout the contest, completing 95% of its passes while converting 13 of its 15 huck attempts and forcing 22 Chicago turnovers.

The game in Pittsburgh will be Minnesota's second contest in three days, while the Thunderbirds will be playing for the first time in three weeks.

Historically, Pittsburgh has enjoyed success against Minnesota, holding a 10-8 advantage in the all-time series across 18 meetings. The Wind Chill, however, swept both matchups between the two clubs last season.

Playoff Picture

Every remaining game on Pittsburgh's schedule comes against a Central Division opponent, making each one critical in the race for the postseason. The top three teams in the Central Division qualify for the UFA Playoffs.

Minnesota (9-0) and the Madison Radicals (5-3) currently occupy the top two spots in the standings. Pittsburgh and the Indianapolis AlleyCats are tied at 2-5 and will face each other twice over the final five weeks of the season. The Chicago Union sit at 1-7, with one remaining matchup against the Thunderbirds.

First pull is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Sunday at F.N.B. Stadium.

This week's theme is Beach Night, and the first 100 fans through the gates will receive a pair of Thunderbirds sunglasses and a koozie, courtesy of James Field Insurance Agency.
