How do I sign-up for tryouts?

Registration is currently open on our website at pghthunderbirds.com or by directly clicking this tryout link here. You must be 18-years or older to participate.

What should I bring to tryouts?
Bring cleats, a water bottle, athletic gear, and a light and a dark shirt (a reversible is ideal).

What skills are necessary to be a good Ultimate player?
While speed and athleticism are important, skills like decision-making, timing of throws and cuts, and consistently doing the small things on the field are essential. The UFA field is larger than a USAU field, so be in good shape and be prepared to grind through longer points. Adaptability is key as different play styles may be required throughout the tryout.

What should I expect at the tryout?
Our coaches and team leaders will run you through small field games, athleticism drills, and exercises to assess decision-making skills. You’ll get a chance to showcase your abilities on the full-size field at the end of the tryout.

What’s one piece of advice for tryouts?
Come focused and prepared to give it everything. Show us the best version of yourself, both on and off the field.

How can I improve my game before tryouts?
Get plenty of throwing practice – while not everyone needs to be a power thrower, everyone should be competent with the disc, especially under sideline pressure. Also, be in shape! With the larger field size, endurance can make the difference, especially in the third and fourth quarters.

How will I know if I'm being fairly assessed?
Our experienced coaches and players are dedicated to providing a fair and honest evaluation. We constantly refine our assessment process to ensure players are evaluated on their abilities, decision-making, and potential.

I'm injured or unable to attend. Can I still try out?
We plan to hold a midseason tryout for players unable to attend the initial open tryout, similar to last year’s format for college and other players with scheduling conflicts.

What are the Thunderbirds specifically looking for in 2025?
Play exceptional defense and make strong offensive decisions to stand out. We’re especially interested in players who break the mold while reliably contributing on both sides of the field.

What happens if I make the cut?
Advancing players will be invited to a more selective tryout a few weeks after the open tryout. This invite tryout will test your skills against other top players.

What happens if I make the team?
Congratulations! Your next steps will be to speak with General Manager Andrew Gardner and draw up a Professional contract! Welcome to the Pittsburgh Thunderbirds!

Do you offer post-tryout feedback?
Yes! We believe in strengthening the ultimate frisbee community at every level. Reach out after tryouts for feedback, and our coaches will provide an in-depth assessment to help you grow in the sport.
