PITTSBURGH – The Pittsburgh Thunderbirds couldn't overcome an early deficit on Sunday afternoon, falling 26-19 to the undefeated Minnesota Wind Chill (10-0) at F.N.B. Stadium.
Minnesota wasted no time setting the tone, capitalizing on a stall call on Reid Duncan and a Pittsburgh throwaway from Ryan Ward to score the game's first two goals in the opening 80 seconds. The Thunderbirds (2-6) never led, but consistently battled back throughout the afternoon.
After falling behind 2-0, Pittsburgh settled in offensively, scoring on every other possession for the remainder of the opening quarter. The Thunderbirds capped the period with one of the game's biggest highlights when Michael Dillard launched a buzzer-beating huck to Will Hoffenkamp, who hauled in the frisbee over several defenders as time expired to pull Pittsburgh within one, 8-7.
The Thunderbirds tied the game early in the second quarter when Jimmy Towle connected with Noah Celuch for the equalizer. Minnesota responded with one of its strongest stretches of the game, using a multi-goal run to regain control and build a 16-11 advantage heading into halftime.

Pittsburgh once again came out of the break with momentum. The Thunderbirds opened the third quarter on a 5-2 run, continuing the improvements they showed in last week's win over Chicago. Just as Pittsburgh appeared poised to make it a one-goal game, Minnesota answered in the closing seconds of the quarter, scoring twice in the final 22 seconds, including a goal as time expired, to take a 20-16 lead into the fourth.
The Wind Chill maintained control in the final quarter, holding Pittsburgh to three goals while adding six of their own to secure the 26-19 victory.
Towle paced the Thunderbirds offensively with three goals while adding three assists. Dillard and Hoffenkamp each recorded a team-high five assists, while Anson Reppermund led Pittsburgh's defense with two blocks.
The Thunderbirds now face a quick turnaround with a pair of road games this weekend and their season now on the line. Pittsburgh travels to face the Madison Radicals (5-4) on Friday before heading to Indianapolis on Saturday to take on the AlleyCats (4-5). A longer preview article on how the Thunderbirds can punch their ticket to the 2026 UFA playoffs despite being 2-6 to come later.
The Thunderbirds return to F.N.B. Stadium on Friday, July 17, for their final regular season home game against the AlleyCats, which will also be Fan Appreciation Night.
