The DC Breeze (0-1) will host the Montreal Royal (0-0) this Sunday, May 3 for Montreal's second game in two days. The week two matchup will mark the first of two for the divisional opponents with a rematch slated for May 30 in Montreal. On Saturday, the Royal kick off their season with a tussle in Boston against the reigning champions, who defeated the Breeze in week one 21-16.
The Breeze enter week two following a tough loss to Glory that was primed to be a blowout in the early stages, as DC gave up four breaks in just the first quarter, while Glory’s O-line went seven-for-seven in the first half. DC bounced back in the latter half by forcing Boston into mistakes and turnovers, allowing the Breeze to finally convert some breaks of their own. The Breeze’s second-half performance was a major improvement, but the struggles of the first half were too great an obstacle for the Breeze to overcome.
The Breeze and Royal dueled twice in 2025, splitting the series 1-1 with the Royal taking a 22-17 victory in May in Montreal. In June, the Royal took a trip to the capital for a rematch with a Breeze team that was without Jacques Nissen and Miles Grovic and were trounced by 12.
The Royal have been out of the playoffs for the past seven years with their last appearance coming in 2017, which was cut short by the Breeze, who cruised to a 28-16 victory. 2025 was another disappointing season for Montreal, in which they finished fifth in the East Division with a 4-8 record.
Montreal enters 2026 with a nearly identical lineup to 2025, as all of their heavy-hitters are returning, in addition to World Games standout for Team Canada Malik Auger-Semmar, who will rejoin the Royal after a two-year hiatus from pro frisbee. Auger-Semmar was a critical piece for Montreal during his time, totaling 185 scores and 39 blocks in six seasons. The Royal have also retained every major stat leader from last season, including Christophe Trembley-Joncas and Quentin Bonnaud, who led in assists and goals, respectively. Bonnaud averaged six goals and two blocks per game with more than 300 total yards in each of the two bouts with DC. In the June matchup, Trembley-Joncas totaled 525 yards with five assists. Jakob Brissette, who led the Royal in throwing yards in 2025 with 4194, will also be active. Brissette was a major factor in the first matchup in 2025 with 465 throwing yards and five assists but was held to just one assist and 292 yards in the air in the second standoff. For the Royal defense, Charles Guay, who is coming off a career-high 19-block season could be a major problem for a Breeze team that struggled with turnovers early in the game in week one.
The Royal are also fully healthy for their two-game road trip, while the Breeze are without two impact players, Breeze veterans Cole Jurek and Gus Norrbom will be sidelined yet again. With the two staples out, the Breeze will hope for Nissen, Coby Loveranes, and Theo Shapinsky to step up as they did in week one.
