The DC Breeze were able to pull out a gritty 12-11 win this Friday in the team's home opener against the Boston Glory on #ForTheDistrict Night at Carlini Field.
The game was tight from the beginning with neither team ever leading by more than three goals, which was the margin of DC's lead late in the third quarter. The Breeze saw that advantage quickly vanish, however, as Boston cut the deficit to just one goal heading into the final frame.
With only 1:15 left in the contest, the game was tied 11-11 when Tyler Monroe was able to come up with a clutch block followed by a few quick passes, ultimately leading to a short toss from Monroe to Elliot Bonnet in the end zone to put DC up 12-11.
Boston took possession again with less than a minute to play, and despite their attempt to scratch out a goal, the Breeze were able to hold them off, breaking up a long toss to the end zone as time expired.
Once again, Jonny Malks and Bonnet were key contributors for the Breeze. Malks, who had a nearly flawless game last week in Philadelphia put up another standout game at home, playing 15 points with 39 completions and a 95% completion percentage. UFA rookie Bonnet was once again able to flex his offensive muscles, leading the team in scores and collecting the game-winning goal.
After DC lost key contributors Christan Boxley and Ben Oort in the offseason, Bonnet has stepped up and taken on a lot of the downfield receiving for the DC O-line. This win puts DC at 2-1 and gives them the tie-breaker over Boston to take the first-place slot in the East Division, if only for a day, as the Glory travel to Philadelphia to take on the Phildaelphia Phoenix on Saturday night.
The next game for the Breeze will be a rematch with the Phoenix on DC's turf at Carlini Field on Saturday, May 18th at 7pm. Tickets are available at thedcbreeze.com/tickets.
