CHICAGO—The Chicago Union is heading to Indianapolis this Saturday to face the Indianapolis AlleyCats @ 5 P.M. CT. The game will stream live on WatchUFA.tv.
Coming off of a stellar 25-16 win against the Detroit Mechanix, the AlleyCats come into this matchup at 2-3, which is fourth in the Central division. Last season, the season series between Chicago and Indianapolis was 1-1, with both teams winning at home. When the Union came to Indianapolis, the AlleyCats were able to grind out a 21-20 nailbiter victory, so Chicago must use that loss as fuel to return the favor and continue their exciting start to the season. The AlleyCats are currently seventh in the UFA in break percentage at 30.69%, as they can convert off defensive stops at a very high level. The AlleyCats are also currently 10th in the UFA in blocks, with 61, highlighting their ability to defend in open space and prevent scores.
However, the Union can hang their hat on their elite D-line to disrupt the Alleycats’ O-line and make it a very frustrating evening for them. The AlleyCats are currently in the bottom half of the league in several offensive categories, such as completion percentage, hucks, O-line conversion percentage, and hold percentage, so prepare for co-head coaches Dave Woods and Charlie Furse to dial up an aggressive defensive game plan that will put a lot of pressure on the AlleyCats’ handlers. The Union is currently second in the UFA in break percentage at 39.34%, as they have been elite at capitalizing on favorable opportunities to get the disk going quickly where the opposing team’s D-line can’t get back in time.
Two players to watch out for the AlleyCats are Seth Gudeman and Cole Hyzer, who have been major impact players for Indianapolis this season. In his fourth season with the AlleyCats, Gudeman has been the leading catalyst for his squad, leading the team in total yards, receiving yards, goals, assists, blocks, hockey assists, and +/-. Gudeman is a jack of all trades, who is a constant X-factor that Woods and co. have to keep their eye on at all times because he is competent at making a play at any moment, no matter the situation. Hyzer is in his second season with Indianapolis and has had a fantastic first half of his sophomore season, leading the AlleyCats in throwing yards, second in hockey assists, tied for second in assists, and is third in goals and blocks as well. Hyzer is a maestro with the disk, as he can facilitate their O-line and locate open receivers all over the field. He poses a significant threat downfield to find open receivers with his impressive huck accuracy at 90% on nine hucks. This is a team that the Union can’t overlook; otherwise, this could become a very unpleasant evening for Chicago, similar to last season.
A player for the Union to watch out for is Dex Dremann, who had spectacular performances in both matchups against the AlleyCats last season. In their first matchup that resulted in a heartbreaking 21-20 defeat, Dremann put up a generational stat line with 698 total yards, 502 throwing yards, 196 receiving yards, eight assists, three goals, and three hockey assists. In their second matchup, which resulted in a 19-14 victory, Dremann had another impressive outing, tallying 401 total yards, 258 passing yards, 143 receiving yards, one assist, and one hockey assist. Dremann put on a show against the AlleyCats, showcasing not only elite handling of the disc but also his ability to be a viable receiving target. With only one game played this season, look out for Dremann to have a statement game!
