Growlers Lose to Spiders 21-16

The San Diego Growlers hosted the Oakland Spiders in their final home game of the regular season on June 28. The Spiders had already clinched a playoff berth in the West Division, and the Growlers were in need of a win to secure their own playoff spot in the South.

The Growlers began the game with a hold on offense, then converted their first break opportunity with a Marcel Osborne to Casey Wu conversion after a timeout. The teams traded, then San Diego had two chances to break again, but Oakland eventually held serve. The Spiders proceeded to rattle off three consecutive break scores after uncharacteristic Growlers miscues and took a 5-3 lead into the second quarter.

The Spiders started with an offensive hold and the Growlers responded with Matt Miller's 40 yard forehand to Jesse Cohen for the goal. Oakland held and then broke again, but the Growlers stopped the bleeding with a highlight reel diving catch from Peter Lenz on a backhand throw from Daniel Brunker. The teams traded, then Brunker recorded a block and Kobi McCracken assisted to Will Turner for a much needed break to bring the score to 9-7. The CA rivals traded, with Oakland scoring last, as San Diego was unable to convert with only a couple seconds left on the clock, 11-8.

To start the second half, the Growlers committed their first red zone turnover which led to a Spiders break. The teams traded, then Jesse Cohen had a big layout catch for a highlight reel goal, 13-10. Oakland held and converted a break before Travis Dunn dished to Kyle Rubin for a San Diego hold. The Spiders spun another string of scores after a hold and capitalized on a Growlers throwaway to take firm control 17-11. After a Dunn assist to Brunker, Oakland calmly drained 1:30 minutes of clock to score with just seconds left to take a 18-12 lead.

In the first possession of the fourth quarter, the Growlers had a great chance to claw back into the game with a break opportunity, but another throwaway led to a Spiders hold. The teams traded a couple goals each, but the clock was working against the Growlers and the large deficit proved insurmountable, despite huge plays from Max Hume and Will Turner. As the time wound down to zero, the Oakland Spiders came away with a 21-16 victory.

The Growlers were led by Marcel Osborne with a +4 performance (3 assists, 2 goals), and Will Turner, Jesse Cohen, Daniel Brunker, and Kyle Rubin added +3 games. Next up, San Diego will travel north to Irvine for a must-win game vs the Los Angeles Aviators on July 5.
