Toronto Rush Season Outlook - 2025

By Jamie Millage, Head Coach – Toronto Rush

Spring brings hope eternal… I think the saying is something like that?

Every season starts with optimism, but the buzz seems to be back around the Toronto Rush. The athletes on this team have put in the work, and they’ve earned the opportunity to answer some big questions, such as:

Efficiency: Can We Turn Talent Into Points?

If you want exciting, highlight-reel ultimate (and I suspect many of you do), that box will be checked this year. The coaches could implement the most boring structure possible (we won’t), and you’ll still see Oscar fly, Poloz do wizardy-things with the disc, Arvids smack down a bunch of handblocks… I could keep this list going for awhile with a long list of fun items to look for. I think we also have 5 guys who are all entering the season believing they could be the UFA defensive player of the year - and I don’t think any of them are wrong.  The question is not can we make plays—it’s can we do it consistently, under pressure, and at a high percentage. Can we showcase the full capabilities of this roster while playing with restraint? Can we make the shift from dangerous to dominant? Can we progress mentally from a team that shows up to the field believing it can win, to a team that expects to win?

Batman & Robin: When to Lead, and When to Support?

There are a lot of extensive resumes on this team, and everyone’s going to have their moment. But there’s only 1 disc on the field. Can a cast of great athletes find that balance of carrying the weight and being the guy, and having the trust to let their teammates be great? Can the returners from 2024 continue their growth and self-belief as they take the field with a mix of Canadian and international stars?

Chemistry: A Roster, or a Real Team?

The UFA season is more like an NFL schedule than a typical club tournament set-up - you can’t just slowly build up to regionals or nationals. Building chemistry will be a challenge for us as we try to integrate sizable new pieces, and manage roster movement - can we find our stride in the first third of the season?

Defensive Identity: Can We Hang Our Hats on Frustrating Opposing Teams When They Have the Disc?

While playing O-line is often seen as a badge of honour in the ultimate community, there are two truisms in support of the D-line really being the place to be:
1) Good teams play more D-points than O-points
2) Competitive players want to be on the field more
The takeaway there is if you want a lot of playtime on a winning team - the D-line is the place to hang your hat. Can we embrace taking pride in our d-line? Can teammates who have been relied on to drive offenses for the past few years showcase their defensive skill sets (and then their offensive prowess)?

Can we Find the Edge in Close Games?

There’s 3 playoff spots in the East, but there are more than three teams with championship aspirations—we’re one of them, but nothing is going to come easy. Can we rise to the top in big moments?

Adversity: It's Coming. Are We Ready?

No perfect season exists. From bad bounces to tough road trips, injuries and unexpected challenges - the question isn’t if adversity hits—it’s how will we respond? Can we be the most adaptable team in the league?

Home Field: Can Varsity Stadium and our Fans be our home base?

It’s cliché, but it’s true - we have one of the best venues and fanbases in the league. Our home games are an experience, and while the players drive a lot of that excitement for the fans, the fans are an element unto themselves, and they make it an awfully fun place to play for our team. Can we defend our turf and give our fans a team they’re proud to stand with?

Answers coming soon - we’re excited to see you there.
