Joel was born in Evanston but grew up in Kampala, Uganda. He attended Knox College for theatre and joined the frisbee team during his first term at college (Knox River Rats). After graduating, Joel moved to Chicago, started a Theatre Company (Pocket Theatre VR), became a freelance director, and has continued to play frisbee!
