As part of the 2022 All-Star Game, the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) and Western Ultimate League (WUL) will host the inaugural Northwest Cup on Saturday, November 12 at Providence Park in Portland, OR. The event will be an 8-on-8, mixed gender game format featuring players from the AUDL’s Portland Nitro and Seattle Cascades alongside the WUL’s Oregon Onyx and Seattle Tempest. The Northwest Cup will be broadcast live immediately preceding the AUDL All-Star Game, with further program details to come shortly.
“As a growing professional sports league, the WUL is proud to showcase our talented players from Oregon and Seattle in the Northwest Cup,” said WUL Executive Director Felicia Yang. “We’re also excited to perpetuate our league’s mission of amplifying women and nonbinary athletes to advance ultimate disc on a global level. I look forward to continuing to align with the AUDL on strengthening our sport, elevating our athletes of all backgrounds and identities, and creating a level playing field for the future stars of ultimate.”
The WUL was founded in 2020, and completed its first season in 2022. With the schedule of games played between March and May, the league consists of seven teams, including Oregon, Seattle, Arizona Sidewinders, Los Angeles Astra, San Diego Super Bloom, San Francisco Falcons and Utah Wild. The WUL is a nonprofit organization and is currently accepting donations to support its mission. For more information, visit westernultimateleague.com/donate.
“We are very excited to partner with the WUL and honor these incredible athletes,” said AUDL CEO and Commissioner Steve Hall. “Access to our game is paramount, and our common goal is to bring ultimate to a more diverse group of people, especially youth. The Northwest Cup represents a common ground to come together competitively on the field and provide an example for all communities on what’s possible in our sport.”
Players and staff from both the AUDL and WUL will also participate in community events in Portland leading up to the game, including hosting a youth clinic to teach the fundamentals of the sport to boys and girls.
Tickets to the game are available through SeatGeek.
