This summer, in conjunction with Boston’s professional Ultimate Frisbee team, Boston Glory, the Mashpee and Falmouth Recreation Departments will be sponsoring youth Ultimate Clinics. Details of the program are as follows:
- Sessions will run 9:00am-noon from Monday, July 15 to Friday, July 19 at Heritage Park in Mashpee.
- The suggested age range for attendees is 10-14. A minimum of 10 players is required, and no more than 30 will be admitted.
- Cost is $150 per person, Reduced-cost or free attendance is available in case of hardship. Enquire here. All participants will receive a Boston Glory t-shirt and Frisbee.
- Clinics will be conducted by Boston Glory players or college-aged Ultimate players with prior experience in coaching/camp counseling.
- Drills and small games will be employed to develop such skills as throwing (forehand, backhand and specialty throws), catching, marking (defense), route running, decision-making and spatial awareness. Skills learned will be employed in scrimmages which will generally occur at the end of each session.
- While campers will not train for fitness per se, (i.e. by running laps), Ultimate is an energetic game, and participants can expect to observe an increase in endurance.
- Ultimate is governed by an ethos known as the Spirit of the Game which emphasizes sportsmanship, voluntary adherence to rules, and respect for one’s opponents. Coaches at clinics will work hard to instill this Spirit in participants.
- Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, coaches will imbue proceedings with a sense of good humor and fun. Much better that participants come away from a clinic with modestly-improved skills and a love of the game than a great improvement achieved without joy.
